Program Description

This opportunity includes faculty preparation and engagement in a week-long condensed version of the existing Zambia IPE course. Faculty who participate must commit to recruiting students for future courses, seeking ways to integrate the course into their department program of study and being part of the leadership team for the course in the future.

There will be one meeting on campus prior to departure. This is a required meeting and will lay out the principles and the details of the experience. This pre-departure meeting will be similar to what the students experience. There will be pre-departure readings and a short assignment.

The group will travel together to Zambia. We will stay with the Dominican Sisters, as the student do, outside of Ndola, Zambia. The course is structured around interprofessional teams. The teams aim to answer three broad questions:

1. What does it take for children to succeed in school?
2. What does it take for women and children to have strong futures?
3. What does it take for children with disabilities to thrive?

Faculty will rotate through the different experiences or they will stay within one area, depending on who participates.  In the evenings, we will discuss experiences and select reading. Prior to departing, the inteprofessional teams will answer the three overarching questions based on their service experience in the community. Essentially, the faculty will experience a sampling of the student experience.

Project Objectives

The long term objective is the development of a pool of faculty equipped to lead the IPE Zambia course and work towards developing new IPE international courses.
The short term objectives include:

1. Begin to expand the relationship with the community partners
2. Begin to explore the economic, political, social, historical and cultural context of the region and country through a first hand experience in country.
3. Participate in a global IPE course, learning from the course lead, the community and each other.
4. Be introduced to intentional framing of the course to include thoughtful content on cultural humility and ecological approaches (structural and social factors) and includes concepts such as bearing witness, suspending judgement, identify, privilege, solidarity, and more.
