UMAIE Scholarship

Through immersion in the life, culture and politics of European cities, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the European Union and European urbanization.
Academic Overview
Through immersion in the life, culture, and politics of European cities, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the development of the institutions, policies, and policy-making processes of the European Union (EU) and their impact on cities. The course examines European Cities with a concentration on the history, politics, governing and urbanization of EU Member States. Contemporary issues of European cities and the EU policy initiatives which attempt to deal with them will be highlighted. Special attention will be paid to the processes of globalization and the impact these processes are having on European cities and EU public policy initiatives.
Physical Activity: Students should be able to easily and comfortably walk approximately one mile, on sometimes uneven and cobblestone European city streets, on a regular basis. At times, this will include carrying luggage. Students should be able to stand and walk for 30-90 minutes during presentations, tours, and site visits. Students should be able to participate in a 2+ mile walking tour while in Milan. Students will be required to navigate public transportation, including taking stairs in and out of train stations and hotels, as many will not have lifts.  Students with special needs and disabilities should work with UMAIE and faculty instructors to determine if accommodations can be reasonably provided.
Technology Requirements: Students should plan to have regular and reliable access to a computer or tablet  with Internet access during travel. Most hotels will have free wifi and public computers. WiFi is free on Eurostar  trains, and in most train stations. Students will be required to compete quizzes online during travel, participate in  discussions, and access supplemental readings on the course blackboard site.
